How then do we avoid an unnatural, unappealing result?
1) Don't go for full correction. Make "softening" of the lines the goal, not "eliminating" and a much more natural outcome is achieved.
2) Use the right product. Restylane Silk is best when subtle, natural changes are desired.
3) Maintain balance. The lips need to be balanced so I almost always treat both the upper and the lower lip. Most women look best when their upper lip is approximately 1/3 the thickness of their bottom lip. But the lips also need to be in balance with the rest of the face. If fuller lips are necessary to help with vertical lip lines then it is important to address diffuse facial volume. The lips shouldn't look 30 if the rest of the face looks 60.
So how do women feel when they get a subtle lip enhancement? One that just softens the lines, increases their fullness ever so slightly and brings a hydrated, youthful shine to the lips? Here's a note from one of my patients that expresses it well:
I just wanted you to know how happy I am with my results! People keep telling me that I look so good and they love my new haircut! My self esteem has improved 10 fold and I love looking at myself. Thank you so much, I'll see you again when the effects start wearing off. "
